What To Do During a Pet Emergency
A pet emergency is every pet parent’s nightmare. In fact, one out of three pets needs emergency vet care each year. When an emergency strikes, it’s important to know what to do and how to stay calm. Here are some steps to follow in case of a pet emergency:
We know how much your pet means to you and how scary it is when they’re hurt or sick, but panicking will only make the situation worse. You won’t be able to think properly and decide what’s the best course of action if you’re not calm. Moreover, an animal that is in pain often reacts negatively to someone who is trying to help them. Any unnecessary movement can also cause them more pain or you being attacked.
The first thing you need to do is call your emergency veterinarian and let them know that you’re on your way. Letting us know ahead of time will allow us to prepare so that by the time you arrive, we can immediately start attending to your pet.
When you call us, chances are that we will give you some instructions on what to do next. This is especially true if your pet is experiencing something like heat stroke, poisoning, or bloat. Try to list or remember the instructions as best as you can and follow them to the letter.
The intuition of a pet parent is almost always right. If you think something is wrong with your pet and they need to see a vet, especially when you don’t know exactly what is happening to them, then it’s best to err on the side of caution. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
